Move over Cheryl, it's... LA Reid?

Cheryl Cole's chances of appearing on the judging panel of The X Factor US have got a little bit slimmer after Simon Cowell's production company confirmed one of the seats has just been filled.

But rather than any of the household names previously mentioned, the man appointed to one of the most high-profile jobs on US telly is a record producer called LA Reid.
And no, we'd never heard of him until now either.

The 54-year-old is leaving his job as head of Island DefJam records to take on the X Factor job - and he should be good at spotting talent because he has played a big part in the careers of stars such as Rihanna, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Mariah Carey.

As you're no doubt aware, Cheryl Cole has been hoping to land a seat on the judging panel, but Fox execs are reportedly concerned that she won't be well-known enough to US viewers - and that they might not be able to understand her charming Geordie lilt either.

No other announcements about the panel have been made, although it's a safe bet that Simon Cowell himself will be occupying another seat on it.

Auditions are believed to be starting in a couple of weeks' time on March 27 - so those execs had better make their minds up sharpish!

What do you reckon? Will Chezza get the job? Should she? Comment below if you so wish...

Cheryl Cole: Her Story

Cheryl Cole rocketed from pop wannabe to the nation's sweetheart after just six short years in the public eye. We look back at the rise and fall and meteoric rise again of the Geordie pop princess...

Cheryl Cole: Her Story

Cheryl Tweedy was born on 30 June 1983. She was raised, along with her four siblings, on one of the toughest council estates in Newcastle. However, after winning several modelling competitions and even appearing in a number of TV adverts as a child, it seemed it would be only a matter of time before Cinders got to go to the ball.

Cheryl Cole: Her Story

A 19-year-old Cheryl auditioned for ITV series Popstars: The Rivals in a bid to win a place in a brand new girlband. A visibly nervous Cheryl performed S Club's Have You Ever to a panel that included Pete Waterman, Geri Halliwell and a certain Louis Walsh. Despite, what was in hindsight, a pretty average audition, she was told she was through to the next round.

After weeks of public votes and sing-offs, Cheryl found out that she had landed herself a place in brand new group Girls Aloud. She joined Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh in the new five-piece and the band's first single was released in the same week as rival boyband One True Voice in a battle to get the all-important Christmas number one.

Girls Aloud's debut single Sound Of The Underground trounced their rivals in the Christmas countdown and, perhaps more importantly for the act, the song was critically-acclaimed by the music press. No bubblegum pop act this, Girls Aloud were hailed as the most exciting new girlband to emerge since the Spice Girls in the mid-90s.

Cheryl Cole: Her Story

Just weeks after her first number one, it looked as though it was game over for Cheryl when she was involved in an altercation with a toilet attendant at a nightclub in Guildford. Cheryl denied both charges brought against her and, while the jury found her not guilty of racially aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, they found her guilty of an alternative charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The judge sentenced Cheryl to 120 hours community service and ordered her to pay the victim £500 compensation. He also criticised her for showing no remorse over the attack. Cheryl managed to cling on to her place in the band, who by the end of the year had clocked up another three Top three hits.

Cheryl Cole: Her Story

Cheryl's court conviction was all but forgotten over the next couple of years as Girls Aloud continued to knock out credible hit after credible hit. In 2004, the singer began dating footballer Ashley Cole and the couple got engaged after he proposed in Dubai in 2005. The pair were quickly dubbed the new Posh and Becks and they got married at a predictably extravagant ceremony in July 2006. However, there was criticism after they posed for cheesy photographs as part of a National Lottery endorsement just days before they tied the knot.

Cheryl's world came crashing down around her once more following a kiss-and-tell in a tabloid, claiming that Ashley had cheated on her with a 22-year-old hairdresser. There was widespread public sympathy for the singer after the sordid details of the alleged fling were revealed and she was later pictured without her wedding ring, leading many to believe that the marriage was over. The pair subsequently reconciled and Cheryl was suddenly the most famous member of Girls Aloud.

Cheryl Cole: Her Story

Following Sharon Osbourne's decision to quit The X Factor, it was announced that Cheryl would be taking over as the fourth member of the panel on the ITV talent show. There was much speculation at the time that she had landed the job because of her increased public profile, in the wake of revelations surrounding her private life. But she proved a natural in the role as mentor to the girls' category and one of her acts, Alexandra Burke, went on to win the series. A nation's sweetheart was born.

Cheryl Cole: Her Story

Cheryl's new-found popularity had a knock-on effect for Girls Aloud when The Promise shot to number one at the end of 2008, giving them their first original number one since their debut single. Despite a ropey live performance by the girls on The X Factor, when Simon Cowell memorably described Cheryl as 'pitchy', the song became their fourth chart-topper and scooped the award for Best British Single at the 2009 Brits.
